Improving Lives in Disaster Affected Areas
India & Malawi
Poverty and malnutrition afflict Malawi’s rural communities. While fish is an important part of Malawi’s traditional diet, most of the fish ponds in Malawi have fallen into disrepair. With replenished ponds and training, Malawian families can earn 8 to10 times more income and feed their children nutritious, protein-rich fish. PROJECT CONCERN INTERNATIONAL’s (PCI) Pond Makeover Project serves as a “hand-up, not a hand-out” by helping Malawians improve their livelihoods and family's nutrition.
Annual flooding in Northern India has become more severe over the years, causing the displacement of over 3 million people and destroying nearly a quarter million acres of farmland in 2008 alone. By providing agricultural tools and training, PCI helps farmers to recover harvest losses and increase annual yields. PCI’s Reinforcing Disaster-Affected Livelihoods in Rural India Project strengthens links between communities, farmers, and government agencies to plan for and mitigate disasters.
Dried out ponds and flood ravaged fields must be restored to improve nutrition and increase incomes.
$15 - 100 fingerlings (baby fish) for a pond makeover (Malawi)
