Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced by war with Russia. As of June 1st, 2022, the UN Refugee Agency reported that 698,420 refugees have entered Hungary. Many of these refugees are from the area of Ukraine close to Hungary and speak Hungarian. Most need shelter, food, clothing and employment.
The Hungarian Evangelical Fellowship (HEF) maintains schools along the Ukrainian border. On the first day of the war, the HEF provided temporary shelter in these schools. The refugees eventually reached Budapest, the largest city in Hungary. There, the HEF provided accommodations, meals, medical care, and employment support for up to 120 refugees each day. Some have received services since the beginning of the war, while others leave after a few days. The HEF also helps them navigate the social-support system of Hungary and find employment.
